Viridian began in 2021 with a vision: to turn fragrance into a doorway to other worlds.

I have always loved stories that make you feel as though you've stepped through a hidden door. Wooden floorboards. Brass vessels of herbs. Cloaked travellers. Bakeries and apothecaries. Old books, older secrets, and just enough magic in the air.

I wanted fragrance to do that.

Not simply smell good, but transport. To anchor a place, shift the atmosphere of a room, and make you a traveller in your own space.

So I learned the craft properly.
Wax chemistry, wick behaviour, fragrance structure, burn science, and batch testing. Failures were lessons that took me right back to the beginning. Then I tested it all again.

Viridian candles are designed to burn cleanly and throw scent with a purpose. Every original fragrance is developed to evoke a place, character or moment: a raucous inn at dusk, a stone altar in a forest, a study lined with old books and arcane secrets.

When you light one, the room shifts.
That's the point.

Vegetable Soy Wax

Pure soy wax, free from petroleum and fully vegan.  It provides the clean-, slow-burning foundation for every Viridian candle.

Lead-Free Cotton Wicks

Selected and rigorously tested for clean combustion, reliable performance and structural integrity.

Carefully Screened Fragrance Oils

Every fragrance element used by Viridian is phthalate-free and formulated within applicable IFRA standards.  Our fragrance materials are individually reviewed against their available chemical and safety documentation before they enter production.

Good craft begins with knowing exactly what goes into it.

Multi-Stage Hazard Screening

We maintain detailed records for the fragrance materials used throughout the Viridian range, and we actively review their safety documentation when creating our unique blends.

Ingredients classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction are permanently excluded from our formulations.  We also screen for other significant hazard classifications, including those associated with reproductive and developmental harm.

If a raw material does not meet our standards for use in the workshop, it does not enter a Viridian product.

Product Integrity

Our formulations contain no parabens, petroleum or unnecessary fillers.  Every product is vegan, and our material selection takes companion-animal exposure into consideration.

We do not make blanket claims of absolute safety. We do the less glamorous work instead: investigating materials, retaining documentation and making informed formulation decisions before our products reach your home.

Eco-Conscious Packaging

Our packaging is designed with sustainability in mind.  We are already nearly plastic-free, and continue working to close the remaining gap, without compromising the experience of opening a Viridian parcel.

Artisan Quality

Every Viridian product is designed in-house, made by hand, and produced in controlled small batches in our Johannesburg workshop.

From formulation to finishing, from design to dispatch, we keep the process close so that we can maintain the standard ourselves.

The Realm gives structure to the scent library and depth to the experience.  It’s immersive if you want it to be. Simple and beautiful if you don’t.

You choose how far you travel. 

Viridian is for readers, dreamers and dark-academia souls - for anyone who wants their space to feel like a story.

As for my story: I set out to create a place where you can escape the chaos of ordinary life for a while, and feel at home in the worlds we were once expected to leave behind with childhood.

When I'm not formulating, testing or making, I'm reading, writing stories or sketching the next evolution of the Realm.

Viridian is built deliberately.
