How are your candles made?

We have a consistent hand-crafting process which we will summarise here.

  • We begin by cleaning and sanitizing glass jars, securing lead-free cotton wicks.
  • We melt natural wax, incorporate fragrance oils, pour into jars, and set for 12 hours.
  • The following day we smooth out imperfections on the surfaces.
  • After ensuring each candle is perfect, we wipe clean the jars, and label by hand.
  • The candles cure for up to 14 days before wrapping and shipping.  

Will the candle be big enough to scent the whole room?

Our standard candles are designed to scent rooms up to 24sqm. The longer the candle burns, the broader the coverage. While all our scented candles have the same fragrance strength, for a stronger scent in a shorter time, consider using the candle in smaller rooms. Adequate ventilation is essential.

How long do your candles last?

  • Our 215g / 250ml standard candle burns for 50-60 hours, thanks to the longer burn time of soy wax compared to typical paraffin candles.
  • Our wax truffles burn for approximately 6-8 hours until the fragrances dissipates.

What ingredients do you use?

  • Our wax is a blend of 100% pure hydrogenated soybean oil, coconut oil and 100% pure hydrogenated coconut oil.  We do not use beeswax since beeswax is not vegan.
  • Our fragrance blends consist of high-quality, vegan, phthalate-free fragrance oils from a European fragrance house. 
  • Our candles feature lead-free cotton wicks, rigorously tested for safety and performance.
  • For our wax truffles, we use soy and coconut waxes and incorporate natural decorations, botanicals and seeds.  We do not decorate our candles to reduce the risk of fire or candles that perform unpredictably.

Do you use pure essential oils?

  • No, we do not use pure essential oils and instead opt for fragrance blends, which combine essential oils and synthetic oils created in controlled lab processes.
  • Using pure essential oils limits us to creating only herbal and botanical scents, making it challenging to create aromas that do not occur in nature, such as a library-scented candle. 
  • Additionally, essential oils in products can be skin irritants, trigger allergies, or have adverse health effects if mishandled. We're experts in books, candles and fragrance blending, not aromatherapy.
  • Our decision to avoid pure essential oils also aligns with sustainability practices since essential oil production demands vast quantities of plant material, potentially endangering certain plant species. 
  • Using high quality essential oils comes at a high cost which would affect our ability to bring you a premium product at a reasonable price point.

How do I repurpose my candle jars?

To repurpose your jar, store household items, stationery, cut flowers, or plant succulents in it. When there's about 1cm of wax left, stop burning the candle. Let the wax cool until semi-solid, then scoop it out with a spoon. If needed, remove the metal wick holder with the spoon and dispose of it in the trash. Finally, wash the jar with soap and water. 

Are your candles pet-safe?

  • Yes, it is safe to light our candles if you have fur-babies.  Many candle fragrances contain harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, which are known to be toxic when released into the air in your home. Viridian candles are non-toxic and safer for you and your pets. Our fragrance oils are phthalate-free, vegan, and as far as we can manage, free from other hazardous chemicals commonly found in fragrances and candles. 
  • We caution you to keep lit candles away from your pets to avoid accidents.  Take extra care if you or your pets have respiratory illnesses such as asthma or bronchitis. 
  • And please, keep candles away from aquatic pets since any fragrance, whether natural or synthetic, is harmful to aquatic animals and water with long term effects.

How do I send an order as a gift?

  • Set the delivery address of the person you want to send the order to. 
  • Then let us know in the delivery notes section of your order if you would like to include a little message in the package and we will handwrite it for you.
  • If you forget to put in a note in the delivery notes box at checkout, then pop us an email at TellUs@viridiancrafts.com with your details as soon as you order and we will prepare the order as a gift.

What do I do if I received the wrong items?

  • We are meticulous, but occasionally there is a mistake we need to correct.  Check your order the moment you receive it.  If you receive items different to what you ordered, let us know in an email to tellus@viridiancrafts.com and we will resolve it for you.
  • If you accidentally ordered the wrong item, then we may be able to cancel your order before it is shipped out to you.
  • If you order an item accidentally and do not cancel it, then it might be best if you and the incorrectly ordered item made peace and became friends because returns and exchanges can be pricey. You could also consider gifting the item to a friend.

What do I do if I don't like the candle I ordered?

  • We understand online fragrance shopping can be tricky. To assist you in choosing, we include a free sample with every order and offer detailed fragrance blend information.
  • If you're unsatisfied with your candle, you can initiate a return by sending the unused, unburned package back to us for a new item. You will be responsible for the shipping fees for the return and the new order.
  • Alternatively, consider gifting the candle to someone who would enjoy the scent and make a new purchase for yourself.  
  • Please contact us if you are unsure what scent you might like - we would be delighted to help you pick.

How can I modify or cancel my online order if I made a mistake?

  • Mistakes happen! If you've made an error, please contact us within 24 hours of placing your order, and we can assist you in canceling it.
  • Once an order has been shipped, it cannot be canceled since it's literally out of our hands and en route to you by the courier company. In this case, if the product cannot make you happy directly, you can gift it to someone who might be ecstatic!

My order was damaged during transit - what do I do?

  • If your items arrive damaged or defective (e.g., a candle without a wick... well that would be super-awkward!), we'll assess the issue and make it right. Email your order number, details, and photos of the damaged or defective item to tellus@viridiancrafts.com  within 7 days of receiving your package and we will do our best to resolve the problem.
  • Please note that we don't provide refunds for damaged or defective items; we will only replace them.

Is free delivery/shipping available?

  • As a small business, we rely on your support to grow. Operating from a single warehouse in Johannesburg and partnering with courier services, we aim to provide top-quality products at competitive prices. To offer flexibility, we provide various delivery options and offer free delivery on orders over R850. Your continued support allows us to run promotions, including extra samples and free gifts for orders over a specific amount. Thank you for helping us maintain these offerings.

When can I expect my order to be delivered?

  • We process all orders within 1-3 working days, and you'll receive updates when your order is dispatched. If you're buying a back-ordered product, it means we craft it upon your order and aim to deliver it within 14 days, with regular updates to keep you informed.
  • If your delivery hasn't arrived after 14 days, please reach out to us. We understand the frustration and will investigate and resolve the issue promptly.

I was notified that my order was delivered but it did not arrive yet.

  • If our tracking system indicates that your order has been marked as delivered, and it hasn't reached you, please take the following steps:
  1. Double-Check Your Delivery Address:  Ensure that the delivery address provided during the order was accurate and up to date.
  2. Check with Neighbours:  Sometimes, packages are left with neighbors or in a secure location. It's worth checking with them.
  3. Check messages from the Courier:  Check all notifications from the courier that you might have received on the status of the order.  There may have been an update you missed or additional information about the package's location or delivery attempt.
  4. Contact Us:  If the above steps don't resolve the issue, please contact us with your order details, and we'll investigate the matter and work to resolve it for you.

How do I order in bulk?

  • A bulk order is an order that is more than 20 candles or greater than 10kgs in mass, or once packaged, exceeds the size of our typical orders.
  • To order in bulk, get in touch with us at TellUs@viridiancrafts.com and we will help you with your order.
  • We will prepare bulk orders on request, discuss with you product wrapping, and order special protective shipping material to ensure your items are safely transported.
  • We will also discuss with you the best shipping choices from a cost and practicality perspective.

Can I return or exchange an order?

  • If you've had a change of heart about your recent purchase and wish to exchange it for a different item, please email us at tellus@viridiancrafts.com within 14 days of receiving your order. We'll guide you through the return process, and you can then place a new order through our online store.
  • While we do have procedures for returns and exchanges, we recommend reaching out to us for assistance in selecting a product or trying our Discovery Box of wax truffles to experience each scent before making a decision. This can help you avoid additional costs associated with returns and exchanges.
