When Books Become Worlds

Viridian Brings Scent to the BookTok Gathering

Recorded in the Fifth Age, Day 217, of the Narrowing Cycle.

On 5 August 2026, Exclusive Books Hyde Park opened its doors for a gathering devoted to the books shaping BookTok: romantasy, romance, fantasy and science fiction titles finding new readers through one of the most active reading communities in the world.

Around 75–80 readers, book club members and fantasy enthusiasts gathered at Hyde Park Corner for the event, hosted by Exclusive Books Hyde Park, and presented by Jonathan Ball Publishers and the Viridian Guild.

When scent becomes part of the story

Fragrance has always been central to the Viridian Realm.

A scent can change the atmosphere of a room, evoke memory, alter mood, and bring an imagined place surprisingly close. For readers, that creates another way to enter a story.

Viridian was invited to introduce guests to the concept of scent pairing for books: using fragrance to complement the atmosphere of a story, its characters and the worlds within its pages.

Rather than simply matching a candle to a book because the names seemed appropriate, each pairing was considered as part of a larger reading experience. The result was a selection of Viridian fragrances chosen to accompany particular titles.

But before plunging the guests into book worlds, and the smell of treason, the session began with how readers can use specific Viridian blends when reading for relaxation: the ideal accompaniment for romance and low-stakes stories.

Selected scents from the Viridian Cozy Collection were paired with BookTok's trending books in the romance genre.

Fragrance Pairings for BookTok Reads

For Red Rising, guests experienced Thieves’ Guild.

For A Court of Thorns and Roses, the Guild presented Mother of Dragons, with Chaos Sorceress offered as an alternative pairing for readers drawn toward the brighter atmosphere of Velaris.

The Poet Empress was paired with Queen of the Vale.

And for Starside, guests experienced Stormfather.

Each fragrance was circulated through the room as the books were discussed, allowing guests to experience the pairings rather than simply hear about them.  This became one of the most memorable parts of the evening.

Guests smelled the fragrances while hearing about the stories behind them. Faces changed as certain scents were introduced.  Guests who might ordinarily have dismissed a fragrance because it contained notes they considered too bitter, sharp or unfamiliar began trying them again from a different perspective.

The scent had context now.  And context changes how we experience fragrance.

The art of pairing scent with story

Viridian's approach to fragrance pairing draws from several disciplines: fragrance composition and blending, an understanding of scent and human experience, fantasy literature and worldbuilding, and the study of the archetypes and atmospheres that shape stories.

The Guild does not simply ask what a book smells like.  It asks what the reader should feel when entering that world.  That distinction matters.

A fragrance can suggest a place, a character, a season, a memory or a particular emotional state. When carefully paired with a story, it can become another layer of the reading experience — something that exists beyond the words on the page while still belonging to the world those words create.

This is where Viridian's work with fragrance becomes something more than the creation of fantasy candles.

It becomes immersive reading through scent.

Books give us stories. A special fragrance can become a portal into that story, bringing the reader closer to its characters, places and atmosphere.

For the Viridian Guild, this gathering marked the beginning of something larger.  There are more stories to enter.
More worlds to scent.

And more Wayfarers waiting at the threshold.
