How Scent Choices Evolve
A Guide to Scent Literacy
Recorded in the Fifth Age, Day 33, of the Narrowing Cycle.

There are certain scents you love immediately.
And others you set aside, only to return to later with a different response.
While this may seem like something random, it really reflects how your perception of scent evolves over time.
Within the Guild, this is understood as a scent evolution—from instinctive comfort to deliberate selection.
Why We Gravitate Toward Sweet Scents First
When encountering fragrance for the first time, most people are drawn to sweeter profiles.
The reason for this has more to do with science than random choice: in nature sweet scents are associated with safety.
Likewise, when it comes to candle scents, the sweet profiles signal safety, reassurance, and nostalgia. They are instantly pleasing to the nose and are not demanding on the senses.
In early stages of scent training, as well as during times of emotional strain, preference leans toward what feels immediately comfortable:
- ripe fruits
- sugared accords
- warm, edible notes
The foundations of scent preference are built on instinct rather than analysis.
How Scent Literacy Develops
With time and repeated exposure to scents, a shift occurs. You start to pay attention to how a fragrance changes, how it settles, and how it shapes the space around you.
Fragrances that once felt too subtle begin to reveal structure.
Layers become noticeable. Complexity becomes interesting rather than overwhelming.
This is the beginning of scent literacy.
Your focus moves from:
“Do I like this?
to:
“What is this doing?”
You begin to recognise individual scent notes:
which notes lift a space, which ones ground it, and which ones linger longer than expected.
Scent preference becomes varied and more deliberate as you learn not only what you enjoy, but when and why you reach for it. And with that awareness, your choices begin to evolve.

When Acquired Scents Become Appealing
As your scent literacy grows, so does patience. You become more willing to experience a fragrance unfold rather than judge it instantly.
Scents that once felt too bitter, too earthy, or too complex begin hold appeal.
You may find yourself drawn to:
- deeper woody profiles
- herbal green blends
- resinous or atmospheric profiles
Fragrances such as Thieves’ Guild, Ancient One, and Green Witch tend to reward this stage of experience.
Instead of immediate appeal, these scents are layered for gradual enjoyment.
They are designed for those who have learned how to read their complexity.
Beyond Fragrance: The Role of Objects
Some creations sit slightly apart from this scent training and evolution.
Potions, for example, are selected for their tactile appeal and multisensory presence.
They are not introductory objects, designed as the ultimate collector’s item for those who want a lasting artefact. Potions occupy space differently — as visual objects that hold meaning.
They tend to appeal to those who:
- already understand scent
- have established preferences
- and seek something more enduring
What they signify is deeply personal and unique to the bearer that holds them.
Scent Evolves With You
If a fragrance did not resonate with you at first, it does not mean it was wrong. It may simply mean it was too early.
As your familiarity with scent deepens, so too does your ability to appreciate what once felt too bitter or complex.
During stressful times, nostalgic scents can be comforting because we instinctively gravitate towards the safety and familiarity of sweet fragrance.
Scent literacy is the ability to understand your fragrance choices, allowing you to personalise your space wherever you are in your olfactory journey.
